The Word Became Flesh

John 1

John's prologue: the eternal Word, with God and who is God, becomes flesh and dwells among us.

John opens outside of time — "In the beginning was the Word" — deliberately echoing Genesis 1. The Word (Logos) is the agent of creation, the light shining in darkness, and then the staggering claim: "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." The verb evokes the tabernacle; God has come to "pitch his tent" with humanity, full of grace and truth.
