The Word (Logos)
John's title for the pre-existent Son: the eternal "Word" who was with God and was God, through whom all things were made, who became flesh in Jesus.
Overview
John 1 opens with "In the beginning was the Word (Logos)," deliberately echoing Genesis 1. For Greek thought the Logos was the rational principle ordering the cosmos; for Hebrew thought God's word creates and reveals. John fuses both and personalizes them: the Word is a who, eternally with God and himself God, who "became flesh and dwelt among us" — the fullest revelation of God available to humanity.
