Quick answer

Jesus urges them to labor not for perishable food but for the food that endures to eternal life, which He gives. He redirects their desire from the temporary to the eternal.

Overview

Jesus contrasts the manna-like bread that perishes with the lasting nourishment only He provides. The Father has sealed Him, marking and authorizing Him as the giver of eternal life. The verse turns the crowd's attention from physical bread to the gift of salvation found in the Son of Man.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 6:27 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
