Quick answer

Jesus calms their fear with the words, 'It is I. Don't be afraid.' His self-identification echoes God's own name and assures them of His presence.

Overview

The Greek 'I am' (ego eimi) recalls God's revelation to Moses (Ex. 3:14) and anticipates Jesus's great 'I am' sayings in John. In the midst of the storm, His word banishes fear. The God who walks on water is the same Lord who draws near to His own in their distress.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 6:20 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
