Quick answer

Jesus crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called Tiberias. This sets the scene for the feeding of the multitude.

Overview

John shifts the setting to the eastern shore of the lake, naming it by its Roman designation as well. The move prepares for the next great sign. It marks the transition from the Jerusalem discourse to the feeding miracle and the bread of life teaching.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 6:1 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
