Quick answer
God sent his Son not to condemn the world but to save it through him. Christ's first coming is a mission of rescue.
Overview
Though humanity already stands under judgment, the purpose of Christ's coming is salvation, not condemnation. This corrects any notion that Jesus' mission was primarily to denounce sinners; he came as Savior. Yet, as the next verses show, response to him inevitably divides people, so that rejecting the Savior brings judgment upon oneself.
