Quick answer

In the temple Jesus found merchants selling sacrificial animals and money changers at their tables. The sacred place had been turned into a site of commerce.

Overview

The temple courts hosted trade in animals for sacrifice and currency exchange for the temple tax — services that, however convenient, had displaced reverent worship in the court meant for prayer. Jesus' discovery of this scene sets up His decisive action. His concern is for the holiness of His Father's house and true worship of God.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 2:14 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
