Quick answer

To serve Jesus is to follow him, and the Father will honor such a servant. Discipleship means going where Jesus goes.

Overview

Jesus calls his servants to follow him, even along the path of self-giving and death. The promise that the servant will be with him and honored by the Father grounds discipleship in glorious hope. Following Jesus, including the way of the cross, leads to fellowship with him and the Father's approval.

Christ at the center

John declares him plainly: the eternal Word made flesh, the Lamb of God, the great 'I AM' — bread, light, door, shepherd, way, truth, life, resurrection — that you may believe and have life in his name.

How John 12:26 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
