Continuing from the previous verse, Job portrays God's attention as ceaseless testing he cannot bear. What would elsewhere be reassurance of God's nearness feels to the suffering Job like inescapable pressure. The book later shows that God's testing of Job, though painful, was not arbitrary but served to vindicate genuine faith.
