Quick answer

God calls His people to seek the ancient good way and walk in it to find rest, but they refuse. Rest for the soul is found in the tested paths of God's revealed truth, not in novelty.

Overview

The 'old paths' and 'good way' refer to the time-honored way of covenant faithfulness God had revealed. The promise of 'rest for your souls' is rich, later echoed by Jesus' invitation in Matthew 11:29. Tragically the people flatly refuse, showing that the issue is not ignorance but unwillingness to obey.
