Quick answer
God warns Judah not to heed prophets, diviners, and sorcerers who urge resistance to Babylon. False religious voices were leading the people to disaster.
Overview
A flood of false prophets and occult practitioners assured Judah it need not serve Babylon. God forbids listening to them, lumping deceptive prophets with forbidden divination (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). Their counsel contradicted God's revealed word and so was a lie. Discerning true from false prophecy is a perennial need, finally settled by measuring all claims against God's word fulfilled in Christ.
