Quick answer

Israel's leaders failed: priests, scribes, rulers, and prophets all turned away. Spiritual corruption reached the top.

Overview

Yahweh indicts every class of leader: priests who didn't seek Him, teachers of the law who didn't know Him, rulers who rebelled, and prophets who served Baal. When those entrusted to guide the people fail, the whole nation is led astray. The need is for a faithful Prophet, Priest, and King, fulfilled in Christ alone.

Christ at the center

Against the failure of false shepherds Jeremiah promises the Righteous Branch, 'The LORD our righteousness,' and the new covenant written on the heart and sealed in the blood of Christ.
