Quick answer

God indicts a people who continually provoke Him by idolatrous sacrifices in gardens and on bricks. It matters because it exposes the seriousness of persistent idolatry.

Overview

The charge details pagan worship practices that openly defied God's commands. Such 'in your face' provocation reveals the heart of sin as rebellion against the true God. The verse reminds readers that God sees and judges idolatry, and it sharpens the contrast with the true worship He calls for, fulfilled in worship of Him in spirit and truth through Christ (John 4:24).

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 65:3 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
