Quick answer

The nations and their kings will behold Zion's righteousness and glory, and God will give her a new name. It matters because a new name signals a transformed identity and status.

Overview

A new name in Scripture marks a decisive change of standing, as with Abram or Jacob. Here God Himself bestows it, signaling Zion's renewed relationship with Him. The promise that the nations and kings will see God's people anticipates the gospel's worldwide reach and the new name given to all who overcome in Christ (Revelation 2:17; 3:12).

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 62:2 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
