If there is a tenth left in it, that also will in turn be consumed: as a terebinth, and as an oak, whose stock remains when they are felled; so the holy seed is its stock.”

Quick answer

Even a surviving tenth will be consumed, yet like a stump that remains when a tree is felled, a 'holy seed' will endure. It offers a glimmer of hope amid sweeping judgment.

Overview

The felled terebinth and oak picture near-total destruction, but the living stump signals that God preserves a remnant through whom His purposes continue. The 'holy seed' points forward to the faithful remnant and ultimately to the Messiah who would come from it (compare Isaiah 11:1). Thus the commission ends not in despair but in the seed of hope that runs to Christ and the gospel.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 6:13 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
