Quick answer

They burn with idolatrous lust among the trees and even sacrifice their children in the valleys. It matters because it exposes the depth of their idolatry, including child sacrifice.

Overview

The indictment grows graphic: pagan worship under sacred trees and the horror of slaying children in idolatrous rites. These practices, condemned throughout Scripture, reveal how far the people have fallen from God. The passage underscores the seriousness of sin that makes redemption necessary and magnifies the mercy of the gospel.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 57:5 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
