Quick answer

Blessed is the one who keeps the Sabbath and refrains from evil. It matters because it shows that genuine faith expresses itself in obedience and reverence for God.

Overview

Keeping the Sabbath and avoiding evil function here as marks of true covenant loyalty to God. The blessing rests on those whose lives align with God's revealed will. While the New Testament reframes the Sabbath in light of Christ our rest (Heb. 4), the underlying call to wholehearted devotion to God remains.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 56:2 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
