Quick answer

God calls people to come and listen so their souls may live, promising an everlasting covenant of the sure mercies of David. It matters because it links salvation to God's faithful covenant promises fulfilled in Christ.

Overview

To 'hear' God is to live, and He pledges an 'everlasting covenant' grounded in His unfailing promises to David. Paul connects 'the sure mercies of David' to the resurrection of Jesus, the true Son of David (Acts 13:34). Thus the eternal covenant of grace finds its yes in Christ, the heir of David's promises.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 55:3 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
