As Israel's defender, God takes the cup of staggering from His people's hand, promising they will never drink His wrath again. This is the heart of the comfort: judgment is lifted. The New Testament shows how this is just: Christ drinks the cup of wrath in full (Matthew 26:39), so that for those in Him there is now no condemnation (Romans 8:1).
