Quick answer

A woe falls on those who drag sin and guilt behind them as if tethered by ropes. It condemns people who deliberately and persistently pursue wickedness.

Overview

The picture of hauling iniquity with cords suggests sinning with effort and determination, even mocking the idea of consequences. Such people are bound to their sin and pull it along willingly rather than fleeing it. The woe exposes the deep-seated rebellion behind Judah's outward corruption.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 5:18 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
