Quick answer

God invites Zion to look up and see her returning children gathering like jewels, adorning her like a bride.

Overview

Zion is told to lift her eyes and behold her children streaming back as ornaments and bridal attire. The bridal imagery signals beauty, joy, and covenant union restored. It anticipates the New Testament picture of God's people as the bride adorned for Christ the Bridegroom (Revelation 21:2; Ephesians 5:25-27).

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 49:18 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
