Quick answer

God promises to be present with His people through waters and fire so that they will not be overwhelmed or consumed. It assures believers of God's protecting presence in every trial.

Overview

Waters and fire picture the deepest dangers and afflictions of life. God does not promise exemption from trials but His sustaining presence within them. This promise of God-with-us in suffering is fulfilled in Christ, Immanuel, who walks with His people through every ordeal unto safety.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 43:2 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
