Quick answer

This desolation lasts only until the Spirit is poured out from on high, transforming wilderness into fruitful field. It matters because God's Spirit reverses ruin and brings new life.

Overview

The pivotal 'until' introduces hope: the outpoured Spirit turns barren wilderness into abundant fruitfulness. Renewal comes not by human effort but by God's Spirit from on high. This promise looks forward to Pentecost and the new-covenant age, when the Spirit transforms God's people and creation toward flourishing.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 32:15 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
