Quick answer

Signet rings and nose rings are added to the list of adornments God will remove. The signet, a symbol of authority and identity, signals that even social standing offers no protection.

Overview

The signet ring was a personal seal used to authenticate documents and represented a person's name and authority. Its removal hints that the very identity and influence the proud relied upon will be taken. The verse continues to expose how fragile human status is apart from the Lord.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 3:21 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
