Quick answer

With the tyrant of Babylon fallen, the whole earth finds rest and breaks into song. It pictures the relief that comes when oppressive power is finally broken.

Overview

This continues Isaiah's taunt-song over the king of Babylon. The cessation of the oppressor brings universal peace and rejoicing, reversing the turmoil his cruelty had caused. It anticipates the deeper rest the world will know when all hostile powers are subdued under God's reign, fully accomplished in Christ's kingdom.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 14:7 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
