Quick answer

The day of the Lord comes with fierce wrath to make the land desolate and destroy its sinners. God's judgment targets entrenched sin.

Overview

This 'cruel' day of fierce anger aims to lay the land waste and 'destroy its sinners out of it.' Judgment is not arbitrary but directed against sin. The passage reveals both the severity of God's holiness and the certainty that unrepentant wickedness will be removed, themes that culminate in the final judgment.

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 13:9 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
