Quick answer

There will be a highway for the remnant returning from Assyria, like the exodus from Egypt. God makes a clear road home for his people.

Overview

A 'highway' for the returning remnant recalls Israel's journey out of Egypt, sealing the chapter's new-exodus theme. God himself prepares the path of salvation for those he has redeemed. Isaiah later develops this highway imagery into the way of holiness leading to Zion (35:8), fulfilled in the way that is Christ (John 14:6).

Christ at the center

Isaiah sees him most clearly: the virgin's son Immanuel, the child on David's throne, the shoot from Jesse, the light to the nations, and above all the Suffering Servant pierced for our transgressions (ch. 53).

How Isaiah 11:16 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
