Quick answer

God applies the lesson: the people's disobedience had defiled even their offerings. Outward sacrifices cannot sanctify a disobedient heart.

Overview

Because they had neglected God's house, their works and even their worship were tainted, like the uncleanness that spreads by contact. The point is that ritual cannot cleanse a heart out of step with God. This anticipates the gospel truth that only Christ's atoning work, not our works, can truly cleanse (Hebrews 9:14).

Christ at the center

The promise that the latter glory of the temple will exceed the former, and that God will shake the nations and bring 'the desire of all nations,' is fulfilled when Christ enters his temple.
