Quick answer

God gives a sign to mark His covenant for all generations to come. He attaches a visible token to His enduring promise.

Overview

God announces that He will give a perpetual sign of the covenant He has made with Noah and every living creature. Covenant signs are gracious helps, fixing God's promises before our eyes. As the rainbow seals the Noahic covenant, so signs like baptism and the Lord's Supper seal the new covenant secured in Christ's blood.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
