Quick answer

In contrast to the coming judgment, Noah finds favor (grace) in God's eyes. This is the first mention of grace in the Bible.

Overview

This pivotal verse introduces grace as the reason Noah is spared, not Noah's merit considered apart from God. God's unmerited favor singles out Noah amid universal corruption, foreshadowing how salvation always rests on grace. It anticipates the gospel, where sinners find favor with God through Christ alone.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
