Quick answer

The brothers send Joseph a message claiming their father commanded that he forgive them.

Overview

Out of fear, the brothers appeal, perhaps with some embellishment, to Jacob's wishes to secure Joseph's mercy. Their indirect approach shows how hard it is for the guilty to rest in grace already shown. Yet their plea opens the way for Joseph to display a deeper, freely given forgiveness.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
