Quick answer

This verse introduces the further genealogy of Esau, father of the Edomites in Seir.

Overview

A second heading opens the fuller record of Esau's descendants now established in Seir. By tracing Edom's lineage, Scripture honors God's promises concerning Esau while keeping the focus ultimately on Jacob's covenant line. The detailed account affirms that God governs the histories of all nations, not only the chosen people through whom Christ would come.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
