Quick answer

Jacob confesses he is unworthy of God's steadfast love and faithfulness, recalling that he crossed the Jordan with only a staff. His humility magnifies God's grace.

Overview

Jacob acknowledges that all his prosperity is undeserved mercy, contrasting his empty-handed departure with his abundant return. His confession of unworthiness reflects genuine humility before a gracious God. Such recognition that every blessing flows from God's unmerited kindness lies at the heart of the gospel.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
