Quick answer

Laban urges Jacob to stay, admitting he has learned that the Lord blessed him because of Jacob. Even Laban recognizes God's favor resting on Jacob.

Overview

Laban's reference to having 'divined' may indicate his use of pagan practices, yet he concedes that Yahweh has blessed him through Jacob. This echoes God's promise that those connected to Abraham's line would be a channel of blessing to the nations. Laban's self-interested desire to retain Jacob shows the world recognizing, even reluctantly, the blessing that rests on God's covenant people.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
