Quick answer

God opens Hagar's eyes to see a well, and she gives the boy water. Divine provision rescues them from death.

Overview

God graciously opens Hagar's eyes to a source of life that was already there, providing exactly what was needed to save the child. The opening of eyes to see God's provision is a recurring picture of grace overcoming human blindness. This deliverance demonstrates that God is the faithful provider who meets His creatures in their deepest need.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
