Quick answer

The LORD rains down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah from heaven.

Overview

This is direct divine judgment, described as fire and sulfur from the LORD out of the sky. The cities become a lasting biblical emblem of God's wrath against grievous sin (Luke 17:29; Jude 7). The event warns of the final judgment while magnifying the mercy shown to those rescued.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
