Quick answer

God formally cut a covenant granting Abram's offspring the land from Egypt to the Euphrates. The promise of the land is now solemnly sealed.

Overview

In this decisive moment God establishes His covenant, defining the broad boundaries of the promised land. The grant is stated as already given, so certain is God's word. This covenant undergirds Israel's later history and ultimately points beyond geography to the inheritance of all things secured for God's people in Christ.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.

How Genesis 15:18 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
