Quick answer

Abram urged Lot to avoid strife since they were relatives. He seeks peace out of family love and faith.

Overview

Abram, though the elder and the one God called, humbly takes the initiative to prevent quarreling. He appeals to their kinship as grounds for harmony. His peacemaking reflects a faith that trusts God rather than grasping for advantage, anticipating Jesus' blessing on peacemakers (Matt 5:9).

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
