Quick answer

The whole earth had one language and shared speech. Humanity was united in tongue before the events at Babel.

Overview

Before the dispersion, all people spoke a single language, reflecting the unity of the human family after the flood. This unity, however, would soon be used for prideful rebellion rather than godly purposes. The original unity of language anticipates the reversal at Pentecost, where the Spirit unites people of many tongues in praise of Christ.

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
