Quick answer

God gives the seed-bearing plants and fruit to humanity for food. The Creator graciously provides for the needs of those he made.

Overview

God designates the seed-bearing herbs and fruit trees as food for humanity, displaying his provision for human life from the very beginning. The generosity of this gift shows that God's intent for creation is the flourishing of his creatures. This pattern of God providing daily bread continues throughout Scripture and finds its fullest expression in Christ, the bread of life (John 6:35).

Christ at the center

From the first promise that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent (3:15), through Abraham's blessing to all nations and Judah's coming ruler, Genesis sows every seed that flowers in Christ — the true offspring, the better Adam, the ram caught for Isaac.
