Even that question came up only because of some so-called believers there—false ones, really—who were secretly brought in. They sneaked in to spy on us and take away the freedom we have in Christ Jesus. They wanted to enslave us and force us to follow their Jewish regulations.

Quick answer

False brothers had secretly infiltrated to spy out and undermine the freedom believers have in Christ. Their aim was to bring Christians back into bondage to the law.

Overview

Paul exposes the agitators as intruders seeking to rob believers of their gospel liberty. The 'bondage' they pushed was slavery to law-keeping as a means of acceptance with God. By naming their tactics, Paul warns the Galatians not to surrender the freedom Christ purchased.

Christ at the center

Christ became a curse for us to redeem us from the law's curse, that we might receive the Spirit and be sons — justified by faith in him, not by works.

How Galatians 2:4 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
