Quick answer
The leaders reported that Israel had not separated from the surrounding pagan peoples and their abominations. The community had compromised its holiness through intermarriage.
Overview
Soon after the temple gifts were settled, the princes brought Ezra grave news of widespread spiritual compromise. By mingling with the idolatrous nations of the land, the people had blurred the line between holy and profane that God commanded them to keep. This concern was never about ethnicity but about covenant faithfulness and the danger of being drawn into idolatry, the same danger Paul warns against in being unequally yoked with unbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14-17).
