Quick answer
Darius commands that the work be left alone and that the Jewish leaders be allowed to rebuild the temple on its site. God's house will rise because God Himself oversees it.
Overview
The decree explicitly authorizes the governor and elders of the Jews to continue building 'in its place,' on the original temple foundation. After years of opposition and delay, official permission is restored. This rebuilt temple anticipates the greater temple Jesus would speak of in His own body (John 2:19-21) and the spiritual house God now builds of His people (1 Peter 2:5).
