Quick answer

God swears He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked but desires that they turn and live. This is one of Scripture's clearest statements of God's merciful heart.

Overview

With a solemn oath—'As I live'—the Lord reveals His desire for repentance, not destruction: 'turn, turn from your evil ways; for why will you die?' This verse beautifully displays God's patience and pleading love toward sinners (cf. 2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 2:4). It is a gospel invitation: the God who judges is the same God who earnestly calls the wicked to life through repentance, fully realized in Christ.
