Quick answer

The oil was not to be poured on ordinary people or copied in composition. What is holy to God must not be treated as common.

Overview

The prohibition protected the unique, sacred status of the anointing oil from ordinary or counterfeit use. To imitate it would be to profane what God had set apart. This guards the seriousness of consecration and magnifies the true anointing found only in Christ and shared by His Spirit (Acts 4:12).

Christ at the center

The Passover lamb whose blood turns away death, the exodus through the sea, the manna, the rock, and the tabernacle where God dwells with his people all foreshadow Jesus — our Passover, our redemption, the bread from heaven, and God-with-us in the flesh.

How Exodus 30:32 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
