Quick answer

God defined the borders of the promised land from the Red Sea to the Euphrates and pledged to deliver its inhabitants into Israel's hand. The land grant rests on God's sure promise.

Overview

These expansive borders reflect the land promised to Abraham and largely realized in the reigns of David and Solomon. God guarantees both the territory and the victory, while Israel is to act in faith by driving out the nations. The boundaries underscore the generosity and faithfulness of God to His covenant word. Ultimately the inheritance of God's people extends to the whole earth renewed in Christ.

Christ at the center

The Passover lamb whose blood turns away death, the exodus through the sea, the manna, the rock, and the tabernacle where God dwells with his people all foreshadow Jesus — our Passover, our redemption, the bread from heaven, and God-with-us in the flesh.

How Exodus 23:31 points to him is part of the one story that runs through all Scripture — meet Jesus at the heart of the web, or follow a trail that traces him from Genesis to Revelation.
