Quick answer
The fifth commandment calls us to honor father and mother, with a promise of long life in the land. Respecting God-given authority brings blessing.
Overview
This command, the first with a promise, upholds the family as the basic ordained structure of society and teaches reverence for legitimate authority. Paul cites it as still binding for Christians (Eph. 6:1-3). Christ Himself honored His parents and the Father perfectly, modeling the obedience this command requires.
