Quick answer

God gave Moses two stone tablets written with God's own finger, containing the words spoken at the assembly. The law came directly from God.

Overview

The tablets were inscribed by the finger of God, marking the law as his very own word. They recorded what God had spoken to all Israel at Horeb. This divine authorship invests the commandments with supreme authority, the same law Christ came not to abolish but to fulfill perfectly on behalf of his people.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
