Quick answer

Israel must remember that it is God who gives the power to gain wealth, confirming his covenant. All ability and prosperity come from him.

Overview

Against self-reliance, Moses insists that even the capacity to earn wealth is God's gift, given to fulfill his covenant promise. This keeps Israel humble and grateful, tracing all blessing back to God. It teaches stewardship and dependence, recognizing that God is the source of every good thing, supremely in Christ.

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
