Quick answer

This introduces the commandments God gave Moses to teach Israel for life in the land. God's law is given to be taught and obeyed.

Overview

Moses presents the commandments, statutes, and ordinances as God's instruction for the people to practice once they possess the land. The law is meant for teaching and obedient living, not mere knowledge. This teaching ministry of God's word continues in Christ's commission to teach all he commanded (Matthew 28:20).

Christ at the center

Moses promised a Prophet like himself to whom Israel must listen (18:15); Jesus is that Prophet, the one who keeps the covenant we broke and becomes the curse for us by hanging on a tree (Gal 3:13).
